Pithoragarh: Hemp, infamous for its drug addiction, will now become a new source of employment for the hill residents. The Uttarakhand government has started an exercise to promote zero-drug Hemp cultivation.
Hemp cultivation will be done in Pithoragarh
Under this, industrial hemp will be developed in hilly districts. In which 0.3 TSC (Treta Hydro Cannon Vilon) quantity of Hemp will be grown. The intention of the government is to link the cultivation of Hemp with self-employment. Along with the cultivation of Hemp in Pithoragarh, an industry will be set up to prepare products from it, for which financial help will be given by NABARD.
District Excise Officer Govind Singh Mehta said that preparations are being made to prepare proposals for industrial hemp. Three offers have been received. Proposals are being invited from all over the district. The Excise Department itself will provide seeds for the cultivation of Hemp.
In addition to the use of hemp seeds in the diet, slippers, shoes, clothes, bags etc. Bags made from this can be a better alternative to single use plastic. If the scheme is successful, then the youth of the mountain will get a new option of employment.
Rural youth can cultivate Hemp in their land. Due to this, good income is possible for the youth. Along with the cultivation of Hemp, youth can prepare cheap bags by setting up industry. After the ban of single use plastic, the market is looking for an alternative to cheap bags.
Hemp is also used to make medicine. The responsibility of preparing the proposal for industrial hemp has been given to the Excise Department. The department will prepare the proposal and submit it to NABARD.
