Canada appeals to Indian citizens and students to take due precautions and remain vigilant in view of the “sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, communal violence and anti-India activities”.
According to the travel advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, there has been a “rapid increase” in anti-India activities in Canada. Government has said that Ministry of External Affairs has spoken to Canadian authorities on hate crime cases and anti-India activities in Canada.
Ministry of External Affairs and our High Commission/Consulate in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested an investigation and appropriate action. A day earlier, India raised concerns over the use of Canadian territory by politically motivated “extremist elements”.
Government of India requested Government of Canada to take action
Reacting to the recently organized Khalistan referendum by a separatist group, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had called it a “ridiculous exercise”. In the advisory issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, it has been said that there has been a sharp increase in the incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in Canada.
Ministry of External Affairs and our High Commission/Consulate in Canada have taken up these incidents with the Canadian authorities and requested them to investigate the above offenses and take appropriate action.
In view of the increasing incidence of the crimes described, Indian citizens and students from India in Canada and those visiting Canada for travel/education are advised to exercise caution and remain vigilant. Some Canadian groups took part in a separatist program in the Canadian city of Brampton on 19 September.
