Iran’s President Ibrahim Raisi has given new dimension to the hijab debate in ongoing unrest in country over the dress code. He canceled scheduled interview with American journalist Christine Amanpour for refusing to wear hijab.
US news media CNN-Representative Christina was given time on Thursday for an exclusive interview with Reicci. Rosie is currently in New York to attend United Nations General Assembly. When Christina arrived on time, officials in presidential office “advised” her to wear hijab (head covering).
American journalist refuses to wear hijab
But the American female journalist directly denied this and said that there is no need to wear such clothes according to their religion and culture. Then Christine and her assistants were seated for about 40 minutes. Later, Raisi’s office informed about the cancellation of interview.
Regarding this incident, Christine wrote on Twitter, “There was no interview, so we left. Protests continue across Iran, people are dying. It was necessary to talk to the President. He also posted picture of him waiting sitting in front of an empty chair designated for Raisi.
Iran’s common people took street in protest against hijab
Iranians have taken to the streets in protest after death in police custody of girl, Mehsa Amini, who was detained for the ‘crime’ of not wearing hijab. Anger is increasing one after the other in different parts of the country including capital Tehran. In response, persecution of government has also started.
So far, death toll in clashes between anti-hijab protesters and police has crossed 30. In such situation, American media organized that interview to know the ‘status’ of Iranian President’s hijab. But Raisi clarified that position without giving an interview.
