New Delhi: eSIM technology has come sometime back, but not many people are aware of it. This is because not all smartphones offer this connectivity option. This is an expensive technology to add as it requires separate space directly on the motherboard.
What is e-SIM?
Let us know what is eSIM technology. If you are thinking that this is an electronic-sim then no it is not. This is known as Embedded-SIM and this is because eSIM technology is embedded or soldered on the motherboard of the phone. This option is also supported on smartwatches and drones, as it eliminates the hassle of creating an extra SIM card slot on the device.

It allows embedded or digital SIM users to activate a cellular plan from their carrier without using a physical nano-SIM. Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea are the only telcos in India to offer eSIM support on smartphones that are both Android and iOS.
Compatible phone for eSim
Let us tell you that most of the iPhones support this option. eSIM works on iPhone 6 and above. Samsung phones that support this option include the Galaxy S20 series, S21 series, and all Z Fold smartphones and the Z Flip.
Other Android smartphones include Motorola Razr and Google Pixel 2 and above. But the biggest problem here is that the smartphone should be compatible with this technology. Now to see which phones support it, you’ll see the names on your screen.
How to Enable eSIM?
The process to activate eSIM is very simple, but it varies from operator to operator. Telecom companies do not charge separately for eSIM and your regular plan is also forwarded to the same number. Apart from this, Airtel and Jio support eSIM on both prepaid and postpaid plans. Vodafone Idea offers eSIM option only on postpaid plans.
Airtel: SMS eSIM to registered email id 121.
Vodafone Idea: SMS eSIM to registered email id 199.
Jio: Get Sim message on 199.
The scanning process varies from smartphone to smartphone.
Samsung: “Settings”> “Select Connection”> “Click on SIM Card Manager”> “Click on Add Mobile Plan”> “Click on Add Using QR Code”.
Apple: “Go to Settings” > “Select Mobile Data” > “Click on Add Data Plan”.
Pixel: “Click on Settings” > “Select Network & Internet” > “Click on Mobile Network” > “Click on Download SIM instead” > “Click on Next > Scan QR Code Received by Email.
Advantages and disadvantages of eSIM
There is no guarantee that the eSIM will provide better connectivity, but it does eliminate the hassle of going to the store to get a new SIM card. The biggest drawback of eSIM is that if you frequently switch between devices, you can’t just remove the SIM card and insert it into the new phone. The activation process forces you to redo the entire process.
