Officials in connivance with educational institutions embezzled 50 percent of the scholarship amount released from Haridwar and Dehradun districts. Scholarships worth about Rs 200 crore were sent to educational institutions from these two districts. Out of this Rs 100 crore was used by the officials and educational institutions for their own use by using various tricks.
Actually, initially this scam was being told of Rs 400 crore. For this, investigation teams were set up in Kumaon and Garhwal. SIT was formed in Haridwar to investigate the colleges of Haridwar and Dehradun.
SIT found that around 150 educational institutions in the cities of Dehradun, Haridwar, Saharanpur, Meerut etc. from both the districts had issued scholarships worth Rs 200 crore to the students of Uttarakhand.

According to the SIT, when it was verified, many shocking things had come to the fore. Of this, Rs 100 crore was embezzled by officials and educational institutions by adopting various methods.
Top officials of the Social Welfare Department were arrested in this case. Many of them have got bail. Presently many officers have been reinstated and are posted on high positions in the government. It is being told that there are still many officers on the radar of SIT. The SIT is waiting for permission from the government to take action against them.
