Dhaka: After Dussehra Durga Puja attack, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has advised people not to indulge in religious atrocities, saying the government wants to ensure peaceful co-existence of people of all religions.
“Bangladesh is a country of secular spirit, people of all religions are free to perform their religious rituals as our constitution has directed,” Hasina said.
The Prime Minister directed Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan to identify those responsible for the attacks on temples and houses of the Hindu community during Durga Puja celebrations and take strict action against them at the earliest. This comment was made a few hours later.
The ruling Awami League on Tuesday took out ‘sachav rallies’ and peace processions across the country against the recent incidents of communal violence targeting the minority Hindu community.
Cabinet Secretary Khandkar Anwarul Islam told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting today that Hasina directed the Home Minister to trace the culprits through a fair investigation and take strict action.
He presided over the meeting from his official residence Gono Bhawan. Meanwhile, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Qadar urged party workers to protest against communal forces.
“We will protest unitedly under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina along with the people of the country,” he said during the party’s ‘Sadbhav Rally’.
