Alireza Zakani is the second candidate to drop out of the presidential race. Earlier, Mohsin Mehralizadeh, the former governor of Isfahan province, announced his withdrawal on Wednesday.

Jakani was quoted as saying by IRIB broadcaster, “Given Raisi’s high acceptance rate, I consider him eligible and will vote for him myself. I am hopeful that his election will bring about serious changes in the country.”

Later in the day, another conservative candidate and former head of the National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, also announced his withdrawal in favor of Raisi.

Voting for the presidential election in Iran will take place on 18 June. Current President Hassan Rouhani is not in the race for the position as he is now serving his second term, which is the maximum term under Iranian law.

In addition to Reasi, presidential candidates include Central Bank chief Abdolnasar Hemmati, parliamentarian Sayyid Ghazizadeh and Mohsen Rezai, the head of Iran’s Expediency Discussion Council.
