Kutch: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the ‘Smriti Van’ memorial built in memory of the 2001 earthquake victims on the outskirts of Bhuj city in Gujarat’s Kutch district on the second day of his visit to the state. PM Modi is on a two-day visit to his home state of Gujarat, where assembly elections are due later this year.
PM Modi held a three kilometer long roadshow between Hill Garden Circle and District Industries Center in Bhuj city on his way to ‘Smriti Van’. Thousands of people gathered on both sides of the road from Bhuj and surrounding areas.
The enthusiastic crowd continued to raise slogans of “Modi Modi” and wave the tricolor to express their affection for the PM, who stood in his car and waved it too. He even got down from the car and walked for a while to greet people.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate several projects during the day, including a ‘Veer Balak Smarak’ dedicated to the children killed in the 2001 earthquake and a milk processing plant at Sarhad Dairy.
During the 26 January 2001, earthquake in Gujarat, 185 school children and 20 teachers were buried under the rubble of nearby buildings while attending a rally in Anjar town of Kutch. He will also address a public meeting at Kutch University ground and launch other projects.
