Bangladesh Minister for Post and Telecommunication Mustafa Jabbar has asked Facebook to make National ID or mobile number necessary for opening accounts on the social media platform. Pointing out the misuse of Facebook in spreading rumor and instability, in the country, he asked Facebook authorities to take measures so that it is not used for propaganda, promoting violence and personal attacks, said an official press release.
During his meeting with Facebook’s Bangladesh Affairs Officer Suzana Sarwar in Dhaka, Minister Jabbar said that Bangladesh is a big market for Facebook. He said Facebook has an opportunity to invest in the country. Minister Jabbar said Bangladesh has invested in creating internet infrastructure in the country with its vision of digital Bangladesh.
He asked Facebook to respect the socio-cultural values of Bangladesh and not allow pornography, gambling, fake content and other destabilizing content on its platform. The Post and Telecommunications Minister also asked Facebook for quick disposal of complaints forwarded by the Bangladesh Telecom Regulatory Authority (BTRC).
Facebook’s Bangladesh Affairs Officer Suzana Sarwar said that the policy and laws of other countries and the situation in Bangladesh are quite different. She said Facebook is careful about harmful content and it takes measures to control such content.
