Telangana State Government has appealed to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to relax the Fair Average Quality (FAQ) norms considering the losses suffered by farmers due to unseasonal rainfall in the state.
The government particularly wants relaxing the permitted moisture content to 20 percent from the existing 17 percent while procuring paddy.
This information was given by Civil Supplies Minister G. Kamalakar to rice millers during a review meeting at the Secretariat in Hyderabad yesterday.
The Minister informed millers that the government has written to the FCI to relax the FAQ norms for the benefit of farmers.
The rice millers said the repeatedly rain-soaked paddy was not conducive for milling as the dis-coloring and high breaking nature due to soaking will result in huge losses to them because the FCI rejects such stocks.
Telangana government, on average, is procuring one lakh metric tones a day during the current market season.
