Why is Dahi Handi festival celebrated?
According to Shrimad Bhagwat, Lord Krishna was very naughty during his childhood. Kanha loved butter very much. That’s why he stole butter from people’s homes in Vrindavan and used to feed his friends too. The women of the village used to be troubled by Kanhaiya’s theft of butter. Therefore, to save the butter from Kanha, Makhan’s pots would be hung at some high place at home.

But the naughty Krishna, along with his friends, would have stolen the butter even then. To reach the high-hanging Makhan Matki, Krishna along with friends would build a pyramid and climb it and steal the butter from the pot. This is where the Dahi Handi festival started.

This leela of Krishna stealing butter is celebrated as Dahi Handi festival. In this, the matki is hung at a height. The boys build pyramids together. A boy climbing on top of his companions reaches the pot and breaks it. The boy who goes to the matki is called Govinda. This whole process is called Dahi Handi.
