According to Shrimad Bhagwat, Lord Krishna was very naughty during his childhood. Kanha loved butter very much. That’s why he stole butter from people’s homes in Vrindavan and used to feed his friends too. The women of the village used to be troubled by Kanhaiya’s theft of butter. Therefore, to save the butter from Kanha, Makhan’s pots would be hung at some high place at home.

But the naughty Krishna, along with his friends, would have stolen the butter even then. To reach the high-hanging Makhan Matki, Krishna along with friends would build a pyramid and climb it and steal the butter from the pot. This is where the Dahi Handi festival started.

How is Dahi Handi celebrated?

This leela of Krishna stealing butter is celebrated as Dahi Handi festival. In this, the matki is hung at a height. The boys build pyramids together. A boy climbing on top of his companions reaches the pot and breaks it. The boy who goes to the matki is called Govinda. This whole process is called Dahi Handi.

Dahi Handi is celebrated every year on the next day of Janmashtami. This time the date of Janmashtami is starting from 18th August, so Dahi Handi 2022 will be celebrated on 19th August.

The festival of Dahi Handi is celebrated especially in Gujarat and Maharashtra. In Mumbai it is organized like a competitive sport. To stop the team of boys reaching the Dahi Handi Mandal i.e. Matki, women and girls pour water on them. This festival is celebrated amidst dancing and singing.
