The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-2021, has come out with some fascinating figures, showing where our educational journey is heading and at what pace. The survey suggests a good increase in enrollment in higher education, reaching to 4.14 crore by crossing the 4 crore mark for the first time. It is an increase of 7.5% from 2019-20 and 21% from 2014-15.
The best part of the research is that female enrollment reached two crore mark, which is an increase of 13 lakh from 2019-20. It is also interesting that for the first time in AISHE 2020-21, entirely online data collection platform has been used in the Web Data Capture Format (DCF) through the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
Increase of 28% in SC students
The survey has shown a significant increase of 28% in enrolment of SC students and 38% in enrolment off female SC students, has been registered in 2020-21, in comparison to 2014-15. A substantial increase of 47% in enrolment of ST students and 63.4% increase in the enrolment of female ST students in 2020-21, have also been recorded, compared to 2014-15.
Increase of 32% in OBC student
Likewise, a significant increase of 32% has been recorded in OBC student enrolment and 39% in female OBC students since 2014-15. The survey has revealed a notable increase of 29% in student enrolment and 34% in female student enrolment in the North Eastern Region in 2020-21 since 2014-15. Moreover, Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) has also improved from previous year for all social groups.
Distance education attracting students
Similarly, an inclination in students towards distance education is also evident from the survey. enrollment in distance education has increased by 7% in 2020-21 from 2019-20. The number of universities has increased by 70 and the number of colleges has increased by 1,453 in 2020-21 over 2019-20, which is a marked development in higher education segment. During the defined period, Gender Parity Index (GPI) has also increased from 1 in 2017-18 to 1.05 in 2020-21.
Number of teachers increased
Owing to consistent efforts being made by the government, the total number of faculty or teachers increased by 47,914 from 2019-20. These all figures have shown an obvious inclination among the students coming from all groups of the society. Survey conducted by ministry
The concerned ministry has been conducting an All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2011, covering all higher educational institutions located in Indian territory and imparting higher education in the country. The survey is conducted taking into views different parameters such as student enrollment, teacher’s data, infrastructural information, financial information etc.
Female enrolment increased
In last few years, the Government of India has taken a slew of measures to improve the female enrolment, which has favorably resulted to 2.01 crore from 1.88 crore in 2019-20, which is an increase of around 44 Lakh (28%) since 2014-15. The percentage of female enrolment to total enrolment has also increased from 45% in 2014-15 to around 49% in 2020-21.
Gross Enrolment Ratio increased
As per 2011 population projections for 18-23 years age group, Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) has increased to 27.3 from 25.6 in 2019-20. Notable increase of 1.9 points is observed in GER of ST students in 2020-21, as compared to 2019-20. Female GER has overtaken Male GER since 2017-18. Gender Parity Index (GPI), the ratio of female GER to male GER, has increased from 1 in 2017-18 to 1.05 in 2020-21.
