Madhubala Madhubala was born as Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlvi in Delhi, Punjab Province, British India on 14 February 1933 in a Muslim family of Pashtun descent from the Peshawar Valley of the North West Frontier Province. She was the fifth of the eleven children of Ataullah Khan and Ayesha Begum. Four of Madhubala’s siblings died in infancy. His sisters who have lived to adulthood include Kaneez Fatima, Altaf, Chanchal and Zaheeda.
Ataullah Khan, who came from the Yusufzai tribe of Pashtuns in the Peshawar Valley, was an employee in the Imperial Tobacco Company. Unknown to family members, Madhubala was born with a ventricular septal defect, a congenital heart disorder that had no cure at that time. According to legend, a revered Muslim mystic predicted that Madhubala would grow up to earn fame and fortune, but would lead an unhappy life and die at an early age.
Madhubala spent most of her childhood in Delhi and grew up without any health problems. [6] Due to the conservative views of her Muslim father, neither Madhubala nor any of her sisters were educated. Madhubala nevertheless learned to read and write her native language Pashto, along with Urdu and Hindi, under the guidance of her father.
A film buff from the beginning, Madhubala performed her favorite scenes in front of her mother and spent her time dancing and imitating film characters to entertain. She aimed to become an actress—which her father vehemently rejected.
Khan’s decision changed in 1940 after an employee was fired from the company for misbehaving with a senior official. Soon Madhubala was assigned to sing Khurshid Anwar’s compositions at the All India Radio station. At the age of seven she continued to work there for months and became acquainted with Rai Bahadur Chunilal, general manager of Bombay Talkies, a studio based in Bombay. Chunilal, who liked Madhubala, suggested Khan to move to Bombay for a better lifestyle.
